Two women stand before the king, one living child between them. Each says it is hers. There are no witnesses and no evidence. Two women who shared one house, and one child dead in the night. Words alone will never settle this.

A woman rests on each pan: one opens both hands toward the child, the other raises a pointing finger. The releasing hand and the grasping hand are already parted within the painting.
