Bible Game · Chapter 28
The Council of the Priests
It is after Lazarus came out of the tomb. When many who saw it believed in Jesus, the chief priests and Pharisees convene a council — to plot how to be rid of him. You watch that council. And from the very mouths gathered to strike him, an unexpected word comes. — This game does not ask whether the signs were from God, or whether the plot to kill him was right. It settles only one thing: what most strongly establishes that the signs happened?
New Testament · John 11 · before those gathered to be rid of him
Unfamiliar words in this case
- high priest — the highest priest in Judaism, who oversaw the temple sacrifices and led the ruling council (the Sanhedrin); the summit of religious power.
- Pharisees — a Jewish group who kept and taught the law strictly, widely respected among the people.
- the council — the highest Jewish assembly and court, led by the high priest.
- sign — an extraordinary, wondrous act. In the Bible it means a miracle that points to something. Here “the signs” are the wondrous deeds Jesus is said to have done.
The painting in this case
Sebastiano del Piombo · 1519 · oil on panel · National Gallery, London (its very first painting, NG1). To help Sebastiano rival Raphael, Michelangelo drew the figures — above all the rising Lazarus. This sign, the raising of the dead, is the one even the council that sought his death could not deny.
A Bible detective game: read the Hebrew and Greek alongside the text, cross-examine the witnesses, and work out what actually happened. Not a quiz you memorize — you win by reading, weighing, and judging. Free, in Korean and English.
This game makes no theological judgments. Every verdict rests only on the narrative facts the text itself states.
