Bible Game · Chapter 4
Naboth's Vineyard
Naboth was stoned outside the city. The next morning the king went down and took his vineyard. Everyone in Jezreel knows the palace did this. The question is a different one — whose hand wrote the plot and sent the letter?
Old Testament · 1 Kings 21 · in the days of King Ahab
Unfamiliar words in this case
- signet — a personal seal, each one unlike any other. Pressed into a letter, it marked 'I sent this; it is my will.' A command sealed with the king's signet was the king's command.
The painting in this case
James Smetham · 19th c. · oil · Tate, London — Smetham painted neither the trial nor the stoning. He painted a man lying in his own vineyard, lifting a bunch of grapes, a child asleep against him. What one seal took away — the painting shows you the thing that was taken.
