Joshua is bringing down the cities of Canaan. The Gibeonites arrive with frayed sacks and dry, moldy bread, asking for a treaty because they came from a very far country. Their worn provisions look like proof of a long journey.

- covenant — a solemn, binding agreement between parties. Often sworn with God as witness, so once made it could not be lightly broken. That is why the treaty with Gibeon weighed so heavily.
