Fire on Carmel
After three and a half years of drought, all Israel gathers on Mount Carmel. Four hundred fifty prophets of Baal on one side, Elijah alone on the other. The people waver between the LORD and Baal. This game does not ask which god is true — only how to set the test fairly, so that no trick can hide in it.

Unfamiliar words in this case
- Baal — a god the people of old Canaan worshiped, believed to grant rain and harvest.
- prophet — one who received God's word and spoke it plainly to king and people. Not a fortune-teller, but one who names right and wrong without fear. Also called a seer.
- burnt offering — a sacrifice in which an animal was wholly burned; the burning up was the point.
The painting in this case
Lucas Cranach the Younger · 16th c. · oil · Gemäldegalerie, Dresden — the fire takes the whole center, and every face in the crowd on the right is lifted toward it. These are the people who had been limping between two opinions (pasach). One fairly built test ended the limping. Cranach dressed them in the German clothes of his own day — placing whoever looks at it inside that crowd.
